Cortes-Hernan-LOC
Hernán Cortés, a famous Conquistador who conquered the Aztec Empire.

A Conquistador (which means Conqueror in English) was a Spanish soldier, explorer, and adventurer. These brave, and sometimes ruthless, explorers invaded and took control of large parts of the Americas, the Philippines Islands, and other islands in Asia Pacific. Many of them were hidalgos, which means they were noblemen from a lower social class in Spain.

Their amazing journeys and conquests brought these new lands under Spanish rule. This happened between the 15th and 17th centuries. It all began in 1492 when Christopher Columbus landed in what is now the Bahamas. The lands they conquered eventually became what we now call Latin America.

Famous Conquistadors and Their Adventures

The first incredibly successful conquistador was Hernán Cortés. Between 1520 and 1521, Cortés, with the help of native groups who were enemies of the Aztecs, conquered the powerful Aztec Empire. This huge victory meant that present-day Mexico became part of the Spanish Empire, known as New Spain.

Later, another famous conquistador, Francisco Pizarro, discovered and conquered the equally large and rich Inca Empire in South America.
