List of Premier League clubs facts for kids
The Premier League is the top football league in England. It started in 1992, and since then, many different clubs have played in it. This article lists all the teams that have been part of the Premier League from its beginning up to the 2023–24 season.
Since 1993, 51 different teams have played in the Premier League. Two of these teams, Cardiff City and Swansea City, are from Wales. They play in the English football league system because of history and practical reasons.
Did you know that Preston North End is the only team that won the old top-flight First Division championship but has never played in the Premier League? There are 14 clubs in total that played in the old First Division but not the Premier League. On the other hand, some teams like Barnsley, Bournemouth, Hull City, Reading, Swindon Town, and Wigan Athletic never played in the old First Division before joining the Premier League.
Eleven of the 22 teams that started the Premier League in 1992 are still playing in the 2023–24 season. Six of these teams – Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur – have played in every single Premier League season! The other five founding teams – Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, and Sheffield United – have been relegated (moved down a league) at least once.
Three clubs, Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford, and Luton Town, were not original members. However, they have not been relegated since they first joined the Premier League in 2017, 2021, and 2023, respectively.

In the 2006–07 season, for the first time, former Premier League teams were playing in all three lower divisions of the Football League. This happened after Swindon Town was relegated to League Two. Since then, other past Premier League clubs like Bradford City, Portsmouth, Blackpool, Coventry City, Oldham Athletic, and Bolton Wanderers have also dropped to League Two. Oldham even became the first former Premier League club to be relegated to the National League in the 2022–23 season.
Norwich City has had the most separate times in the Premier League, with six different spells. Each time they were in the league for one to three seasons.
Three clubs – Luton Town, Notts County, and West Ham United – were in the top division in 1991–92. This means they were part of the original talks that led to the Premier League being formed. However, these clubs were relegated that season, so they weren't official founding members of the Premier League. West Ham got promoted to the Premier League the very next season. Notts County has not returned to the top league since, even dropping to the National League in 2019. Luton Town also went down to the National League in 2009. But they made an amazing comeback, returning to the Football League in 2014 and then getting promoted to the Premier League in 2023 after winning their play-off final.
