The Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England, is famous for its beautiful scenery, including many lakes, tarns, and reservoirs. These are all different types of water bodies you can find there.

Interestingly, only one of these large water bodies is actually called a "lake" in its traditional name: Bassenthwaite Lake. Most of the bigger ones are called "mere" or "water," like Windermere or Coniston Water. Smaller ones are usually called "tarns." So, if you hear someone say "Lake Windermere," it's not the traditional way to say it!

Water Bodies That Are No Longer There

Sometimes, water bodies change or disappear. Here are a couple of examples from the Lake District:

• Baystone Bank Reservoir, east of Black Combe (this reservoir was no longer used and was removed in 2011)
• Keppel Cove Tarn, north of Catstycam, its dam was destroyed by a flood in 1931
