Peru has been a part of the Olympic Games for many years! They have officially competed in 20 Summer Olympic Games and 3 Winter Olympic Games. The Peruvian Olympic Committee helps Peruvian athletes get ready for the Olympics. This committee was started in 1924 and was recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1936.

Peru's first official time at the Olympics was at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. But even before that, a Peruvian named Carlos de Candamo competed in fencing at the 1900 Summer Olympics. Peru first joined the Winter Olympic Games in 2010.

Peru has won a total of five Olympic medals! They won three medals in shooting, one in volleyball, and one in sailing. Their only gold medal was won by Edwin Vásquez in shooting at the 1948 Summer Olympics. The first silver medal went to Francisco Boza in shooting at the 1984 Summer Olympics. The Peru women's national volleyball team won Peru's second silver medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Juan Giha won the third silver medal in shooting at the 1992 Summer Olympics. The first bronze medal was won by Stefano Peschiera in sailing at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Peru's Olympic Football History

1936 Summer Olympics Football Team

Peru's football team played for the first time at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Famous players like Alejandro Villanueva and Teodoro Fernández were on the team. They easily won their first match against Finland, 7-3. Their next game was against Austria in the quarterfinals. Peru came back from being two goals behind to tie the game, then scored 5 goals in overtime! They won 4-2.

However, Austria asked for a rematch. They claimed Peruvian fans had rushed the field. The Olympic Committee and FIFA agreed with Austria. Peru protested this decision, feeling it was unfair. As a result, the entire Olympic teams from Peru and Colombia left Germany. Other countries like Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Mexico supported Peru. To this day, many believe that Adolf Hitler and the Nazi authorities might have been involved in this situation.

1960 Summer Olympics Football Team

Peru's U-23 football team qualified again for the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. They scored a quick goal against France but lost 2-1. They also lost to Hungary 6-2. In their last match, Peru beat India 3-1. Peru has not qualified for the Olympic football tournament since 1960.
