The UEFA European Football Championship 2020, often called UEFA Euro 2020, was a big football tournament in Europe. It was the 16th time this championship was held. Even though it was called "Euro 2020," it actually took place from 11 June to 11 July 2021.

The tournament was special because it was held in 11 different cities across 11 countries. This was done to celebrate the 60th "birthday" of the UEFA European Football Championship.

Portugal had won the previous Euro in 2016. But in Euro 2020, Italy won their second title. They beat England in the final match. The games were moved to 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The UEFA Euro 2020 tournament used 11 amazing stadiums in different countries. The very first match of the tournament was played at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy.

Here is a list of all the stadiums that hosted games:

How the Tournament Worked

The tournament started with a "group stage." The 24 teams were split into six groups, from Group A to Group F. Each team played against the other teams in their group.

Teams earned points for their games:

  • 1 point for a draw (a tie)
  • 0 points for a loss

The top two teams from each of the six groups moved on to the next round. Also, the four best third-place teams from all the groups got to move on. This made a total of 16 teams for the "knockout stage."

The Grand Final

The final match was a thrilling game between Italy and England. It was played at Wembley Stadium in London. These two teams had played each other many times before. Their last big tournament match was in 2012, where Italy won against England in a penalty shootout.

The Euro 2020 final was also very close. The game ended in a 1-1 tie after extra time. This meant the winner had to be decided by a penalty shootout. Italy won the shootout 3-2, becoming the champions of Euro 2020!
