Musical Style and Influences
Music Style
Grande's music is mostly pop and R&B. It also includes parts of EDM, hip hop, and trap. Trap music became more noticeable in her songs starting with her Christmas & Chill EP. She has worked with producer Tommy Brown on all her albums. Grande has learned how to sound engineer and produce her own vocals because she likes to be involved in every project. Rapper Mac Miller first taught her how to use the music software Pro Tools. She has co-written songs about many topics, such as love, independence, and moving on from the past.
Her first album, Yours Truly, was praised for sounding like 1990s R&B. Her second album, My Everything, explored EDM and electropop styles. On her third album, Dangerous Woman, Grande expanded her pop and R&B sound. This album included different styles like reggae-pop ("Side to Side") and dance-pop ("Be Alright"). Trap-pop was more heavily featured on her fourth and fifth albums, Sweetener and Thank U, Next. Sweetener explored funk music with themes of love. Thank U, Next focused on trap and hip hop with R&B sounds, with lyrics about breakups and self-love. Her sixth album, Positions, continued the R&B and trap-pop sound, with lyrics about love and relationships.
Musical Influences
Grande grew up listening mostly to urban pop and 1990s music. She says Gloria Estefan inspired her to become a singer after seeing her perform when she was eight. Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston are her main vocal inspirations. Grande was also influenced by Destiny's Child, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera, and Madonna. She has said that Imogen Heap is her favorite musician, songwriter, and producer. Grande also named Judy Garland as a childhood influence, admiring her ability to tell "a story when she sings".

Grande has expressed admiration for how rappers release music, saying she wants to release music "the way these boys do." This inspired her to release "Thank U, Next" without any prior announcement.
Voice and Singing
Grande is described as a soprano singer, with a four-octave vocal range and a whistle register (very high notes). When her first album Yours Truly came out, critics compared her wide vocal range to Mariah Carey's.

Jon Pareles of The New York Times noted that Grande's voice "can be silky, breathy or cutting... it's always supple and airborne, never forced." Composer Jason Robert Brown wrote that Grande's "unbelievable sound" helps her overcome any challenges.
Grande has admitted that her enunciation (how clearly she speaks words) was sometimes hard to understand in her earlier songs. However, critics have noted a big improvement in her singing on Eternal Sunshine, possibly due to her vocal training for Wicked.
