List of European countries by area facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Europe is a huge continent, and it's home to many different countries! Have you ever wondered which European country is the biggest or the smallest? This article lists European countries and other areas by their size.

The total area of Europe is about 10 million square kilometers. That's a lot of land! When we talk about countries that are in both Europe and Asia (like Russia or Turkey), we only count the part of them that is in Europe for this list. We also include any lakes or rivers within a country's borders when we measure its area.

Where Does Europe End?

Europe and Asia are connected, so it's not always easy to draw a clear line between them. The border often follows historical, political, and cultural ideas, not just geography. This is why some countries are called "transcontinental" because they are in both continents.

This map of Europe shows one common way people define the borders between continents.

Legend:

  • Blue = Countries that are in both Europe and Asia.
  • Green = Areas sometimes thought of as European, but are geographically outside Europe's main borders.
