A census-designated place (often called a CDP) is a special kind of area in the United States. It's like a community that doesn't have its own official local government, but it still has a name and people living there. The U.S. Census Bureau counts the people in these areas during the census (a big count of everyone in the country). This helps them collect information about communities that aren't officially cities or towns.
In the state of Utah, there were 81 CDPs counted in 2010. Over time, some of these places grew and decided to become official towns or cities. For example, Dutch John and Millcreek became incorporated towns in 2016. This means they formed their own local governments. Also, some CDPs in Salt Lake County changed into "metro townships," which are a bit like smaller cities with some local control. Because of these changes, the number of CDPs in Utah went down to 74.
