List of chicken dishes facts for kids
Chicken is one of the most popular types of meat on Earth, and it was one of the first animals people learned to raise for food. We get both meat and eggs from chickens. People cook chicken in tons of different ways, depending on where they live and what their culture is like. Chickens are so popular because almost every part of them can be eaten, and they are pretty easy to raise. Chickens raised for meat are called broilers, and those raised for eggs are called layers.
People have been eating chicken for a very long time! There are old carvings from Babylon (around 600 BC) that show chicken as food. During the Middle Ages, chicken was one of the most common meats available. People ate it across a huge part of the world, from Europe to Asia. Different kinds of chickens were eaten, like capons (male chickens), pullets (young hens), and older hens. Chicken was even a main ingredient in a popular medieval dish called "white dish," which was a stew made with chicken, fried onions, milk, and spices, sometimes even with sugar!
