List of longest rivers of the United States facts for kids

Mississippiriver-new-01
The Mississippi River system includes the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, which are the two longest main rivers in the U.S. This map also shows 18 other long rivers. The main Mississippi River is shown in dark blue.

The longest rivers of the United States are amazing natural wonders! Here, we'll learn about 38 of these rivers, each flowing for at least 500 miles (about 800 kilometers).

The "main stem" is like the river's main body. It's the longest part that flows downstream, not counting its smaller branches (called tributaries). Experts at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) measure a river's main stem from where it starts (its source) to where it ends (its mouth). Some famous rivers, like the Atchafalaya, Willamette, and Susquehanna, aren't on this list because their main parts are shorter than 500 miles.

Some of these amazing rivers also cross or form borders with other countries. For example, the Milk River, Red River of the North, and Saint Lawrence River start in the U.S. and flow into Canada. The Yukon and Columbia rivers do the opposite, starting in Canada and flowing into the U.S. A part of the Saint Lawrence River even acts as a border between Canada (Ontario province) and the U.S. (New York state). The Milk River is special because it crosses the U.S.-Canada border twice! The Colorado River and the Rio Grande start in the U.S. and flow into or along the border with Mexico. Even the areas that collect water for the Mississippi and Missouri rivers (called their 'drainage basins') reach into Canada. The Gila River's drainage basin also extends into Mexico.

When we talk about rivers, numbers like length or how much water flows can sometimes be a little different depending on where you look. A scientist named Ruth Patrick once explained that information about river length, how much water they carry, and the land they drain can vary a lot. She suggested that these kinds of tables are best for showing which rivers are generally longer or bigger, rather than worrying too much about small differences in the exact numbers.

Longest Rivers Table

The information in the table below mostly comes from a book called Rivers of North America. If other sources have very different numbers (more than 10% different), we've added a note. "Discharge" means how much water flows out of the river at its end (its mouth). In the "States, provinces, and map" column, you'll see "s" for where the river starts (source) and "m" for where it ends (mouth). Countries outside the U.S. are written in italic letters. We use abbreviations like "km" for kilometer, "mi" for mile, "s" for second, "m" for meter, and "ft" for foot.
