Spider-Man is a famous superhero from Marvel Comics. He was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Spider-Man has appeared in many different types of media, including movies, since the 1970s. The first Spider-Man movie was a TV film called Spider-Man in 1977. It was a pilot for The Amazing Spider-Man TV show on CBS.

During the 1980s, Marvel Comics tried to make a big movie for cinemas. This was a long process with many different directors, writers, and money issues. After many discussions about who owned the rights to Spider-Man, Sony Pictures got the film rights from Marvel in 1999. They paid $7 million for these rights.

In the 2000s, Columbia Pictures made three Spider-Man movies. Tobey Maguire played Spider-Man in these films. They were Spider-Man (2002), Spider-Man 2 (2004), and Spider-Man 3 (2007). The first movie changed how Hollywood thought about superhero films. Later, a new series of films started with Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man. These were The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014).

Sony then made a deal with Marvel Studios. This allowed Spider-Man to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In the MCU, Tom Holland plays Spider-Man. His first appearance was in Captain America: Civil War (2016). There are also animated Spider-Verse movies. These films feature many different Spider-People, with Miles Morales as the main hero. Shameik Moore voices Miles.

Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU) includes movies about other characters from Spider-Man's world. These films are connected to the Spider-Man movies, but Spider-Man himself does not always appear. Fans have also made their own Spider-Man films. These show many different ideas about the character.

The main Spider-Man movies have been very successful. They are one of the highest-earning film series ever. Together, they have made over $11 billion around the world. Most critics have liked the films. Some have even won Academy Awards for their amazing visual effects and animation.

TV Films and Early Projects

Spider-Man is the secret identity of high school student Peter Parker. Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created him in 1962. In the 1970s, Marvel worked with CBS to make a TV show. This partnership led to three TV films starring Nicholas Hammond as Spider-Man. These films were part of The Amazing Spider-Man series.

The first film, Spider-Man (1977), showed Peter trying to stop a villain. This villain wanted to control people's minds. Two more films, Spider-Man Strikes Back (1979) and Spider-Man: The Dragon's Challenge (1981), were made from TV episodes. These movies were shown in some theaters outside the United States.

Around the same time, a Japanese version of Spider-Man was made. Toei Company created a movie, Spider-Man (1978). It was a spin-off from a live-action TV show called Supaidāman. This Japanese film had a very different origin story for Spider-Man. He was a motorcyclist who got powers to avenge his father.

Making a Big Movie

After the success of Superman (1978), Marvel wanted to make a big Spider-Man movie. They had many ideas that didn't work out. Some ideas included a musical or a fight against a giant robot. In 1982, producer Roger Corman tried to make a film with Orion Pictures. Stan Lee had an idea for the story, featuring Doctor Octopus. But Lee and Corman couldn't agree on how much money to spend.

Later, The Cannon Group bought the film rights in 1985. They had five years to make a movie. Early ideas for the film were very different from the comics. Stan Lee helped them get back to the original story. Many writers and directors worked on the script. But money problems and disagreements about the story made it hard to finish the movie.

The film rights changed hands several times. Eventually, James Cameron, a famous director, was hired. He wrote an idea for a movie that showed Spider-Man as a complex character. The cost of making the film grew very high. Because of this, the company decided not to make the movie in 1992.

There were many disagreements about who owned the Spider-Man rights. Different companies thought they had the rights. This led to many legal discussions. By the mid-1990s, some of the companies involved faced financial difficulties. In 1998, the courts decided that the original rights deals had ended. This meant the rights went back to Marvel.

In 1999, Marvel made a deal with Sony Pictures. Sony got the rights to make Spider-Man movies and TV shows for $7 million. Another company, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), also had a claim to the rights. They traded their Spider-Man claim for rights to the James Bond film Casino Royale. Sony can keep the Spider-Man rights as long as they release a new film every five years.

Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy

Tobey Maguire 2014

Columbia Pictures started making Spider-Man after getting the rights in 1999. Sam Raimi became the director because of his great enthusiasm. David Koepp wrote the first script, using some ideas from James Cameron's earlier work. The script was later improved by other writers.

In July 2000, Tobey Maguire was chosen to play Peter Parker. He signed a deal for three movies. Raimi really wanted Maguire for the role. Other actors like Leonardo DiCaprio were also considered.

Spider-Man shows Peter learning to use his new superpowers. He got them after being bitten by a special spider. After his Uncle Ben (Cliff Robertson) dies, Peter decides to fight crime. He faces off against the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe). The movie was filmed from January to June 2001. It came out in May 2002.

Spider-Man was the third highest-grossing film of 2002. It earned $825 million worldwide. It was nominated for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound. This film helped shape how superhero movies were made in Hollywood.

Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Columbia announced a sequel to Spider-Man in April 2002. Most of the original filmmaking team returned. The final script was written by Alvin Sargent and others. Tobey Maguire received a large salary for this film.

Maguire had some back pain from another movie. Columbia briefly considered replacing him. But they changed their minds after some discussions.

The story for Spider-Man 2 was inspired by the "Spider-Man No More!" comic book arc. Peter struggles with his daily life, which makes his powers weaker. He even tries to stop being Spider-Man. Meanwhile, his mentor, Dr. Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina), has a terrible accident. He becomes Doctor Octopus, a mad scientist who wants to destroy New York. Filming happened in 2003. Spider-Man 2 premiered in June 2004. The film won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Spider-Man 3 (2007)

While Spider-Man 2 was still in theaters, Raimi and his brother Ivan started planning the next movie. Alvin Sargent wrote the screenplay. The filmmakers wanted to tell a story about forgiveness and growing up. They also focused on Peter's relationship with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst).

Spider-Man 3 shows Peter facing many challenges. These include Flint Marko / Sandman (Thomas Haden Church). An alien symbiote also tries to take over Peter. This leads to the creation of Edward "Eddie" Brock Jr. / Venom (Topher Grace). Filming took place from January to July 2006. The movie was released in May 2007. Spider-Man 3 earned $890.9 million. However, it received mixed reviews from critics.

Spider-Man 4 Was Not Made

There were different reports about Spider-Man 4. Some said Sony wanted to make it quickly, along with a fifth film. But Raimi said they only planned for Spider-Man 4. Sony hired writers to work on scripts for future Spider-Man films.

The script for Spider-Man 4 was rewritten several times. Raimi was not happy with Spider-Man 3. He wanted to make a really good story to end the series. But he had disagreements with Sony about the story and the time they had. The release date was moved many times. In January 2010, Raimi decided not to direct Spider-Man 4. Sony then canceled the film and decided to start a new series.

Marc Webb's Amazing Spider-Man Films

Columbia Pictures decided to reboot Spider-Man with Marvel Studios. They wanted a new origin story that showed Peter's normal life. Marc Webb was chosen as the director. Several writers worked on the script.

They looked for mostly new actors for the roles. Andrew Garfield was cast as Peter Parker in July 2010. He signed a deal for three movies. Webb was impressed by Garfield's audition.

The filmmakers wanted to show Peter as an outsider in a modern way. In The Amazing Spider-Man, Peter fights the Lizard. The Lizard is the monstrous form of Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans). Connors was a scientist who worked with Peter's father. The movie was filmed from December 2010 to April 2011. It was released in the United States in July 2012. The Amazing Spider-Man was the seventh highest-grossing film of 2012. It earned $758 million at the box office.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

Webb and Garfield were confirmed to return for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in September 2012. James Vanderbilt wrote an early draft. Jeff Pinkner, Roberto Orci, and Alex Kurtzman then wrote the final script. The Spider-Man costume was redesigned to look more like the comic books and the Raimi films.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 shows Peter trying to protect Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). This leads to battles with Electro (Jamie Foxx), who controls electricity. He also fights a vengeful Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan). Filming lasted about 100 days. The movie was released in May 2014. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 made money, but it did not do as well as the first Amazing Spider-Man film.

The Series Ended

The success of The Amazing Spider-Man led to talks about a bigger Spider-Man film universe. Sony planned a third and fourth movie for 2016 and 2018. Webb was only confirmed to direct the third film. However, other spin-off projects became more important. This was partly because The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did not do as well as expected. The sequel plans ended when Sony made a new deal with Marvel.

Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Working with Marvel Studios

Marvel had wanted Spider-Man to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since 2014. They wanted more control over the film rights because of their recent box office success. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige suggested bringing The Amazing Spider-Man films into the MCU. This was to help future related movies.

At the same time, Sony tried to connect their films to the MCU. They wanted to use the design of Oscorp Tower from The Amazing Spider-Man in The Avengers (2012). But the approval came too late. Another idea was a crossover film combining the Amazing Spider-Man universe with the Raimi trilogy.

In December 2014, some private information about Sony's plans became public. This included emails about Sony and Marvel discussing Spider-Man joining the MCU. They talked about him appearing in Captain America: Civil War (2016). After some negotiations, Sony and Disney made a deal in February 2015. This deal allowed Marvel to reduce their payments to Sony based on how well their films did. Sony kept creative control over the MCU Spider-Man films.

The studios renegotiated again in 2019. This briefly ended their partnership. Sony wanted to keep their original deal. Disney wanted to share the funding and profits equally for future Spider-Man films produced by Feige. After fans reacted strongly, they reached a new deal in September. This deal guaranteed a third Spider-Man film and another MCU project.

Spider-Man's Own Movies

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

Work on an MCU Spider-Man movie started in February 2015. Jon Watts was chosen as the director in June 2015. Marvel noticed Watts because of his independent thriller Cop Car (2015). Several writers worked on the script for Homecoming.

About 1,500 actors were considered for the role of Peter Parker / Spider-Man. Six actors auditioned with Robert Downey Jr. (who plays Iron Man). This was to see their chemistry on screen. Tom Holland and Charlie Rowe were the finalists. Holland was cast as Peter in June 2015. He signed a deal for six films: three Spider-Man movies and three other MCU films.

Homecoming tells the story of Peter becoming Spider-Man. The filmmakers described it as a coming-of-age story. Filming took place from June to October 2016. The movie was released in July 2017.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

Studio executives were already thinking about sequels before Homecoming was released. Spider-Man: Far From Home was planned as the last film of the third phase of the MCU's Infinity Saga. Watts and screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers returned for the film. Watts wanted to resolve the stories of the Spider-Man characters after Avengers: Endgame (2019).

In Far From Home, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) asks Peter for help. Peter teams up with Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) to defeat the Elementals. Filming happened from July to October 2018. The movie was released in July 2019. Far From Home was the first Spider-Man film to earn $1 billion at the box office.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

A third MCU Spider-Man film began development after Sony and Marvel's contract was in place. Watts continued as director. McKenna and Sommers wrote the screenplay for Spider-Man: No Way Home. The writers came up with a multiverse story. It was inspired by the film It's a Wonderful Life (1946).

In the story, Peter asks Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) for help. He wants to reverse the events that revealed his identity as Spider-Man. The film connects Sony's Spider-Man universes to the MCU. It features several characters from those films, including Maguire and Garfield's Spider-Men. No Way Home was filmed from October 2020 to March 2021. It debuted in theaters in December 2021. It became the highest-grossing film of 2021, earning $1.910 billion.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026)

Amy Pascal announced plans for a second trilogy of MCU Spider-Man films in 2021. Although No Way Home was Holland's last solo Spider-Man film under his contract, he was confirmed to return for Spider-Man: Brand New Day in 2024. The film was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. Filming was delayed because Holland was also working on Avengers: Doomsday and Christopher Nolan's film The Odyssey (both 2026). Brand New Day debuted in July 2026. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes noted that the film "is a promising reset that portends Spidey will remain sticky on the big screen for years to come."

Team-Up Roles

Captain America: Civil War was Spider-Man's first appearance in the MCU. The directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, really wanted to bring the character into the film. Production for Civil War started in 2015 and lasted four months.

Marvel also made two Avengers films with Holland as Spider-Man. These were Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). These two films were originally planned as one big movie. But they were later split into two separate films. They were filmed at the same time in 2017.

Animated Spider-Verse Films

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did not do as well, Sony started planning animated spin-offs. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were hired to create an animated film. Their idea came from the "Spider-Verse" comic book story. It features Miles Morales, a different version of Spider-Man, as the main character.

Lord and Rodney Rothman wrote the script for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Rothman, Bob Persichetti, and Peter Ramsey directed the film. Actor Shameik Moore voices Miles. Other actors like Jake Johnson, John Mulaney, Nicolas Cage, and Chris Pine voice Spider-Men from other universes. The Spider-Verse films exist in their own timeline, separate from the live-action movies. After its December 2018 release, Into the Spider-Verse won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)

Discussions for a sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, began before the first film was released. Across the Spider-Verse was originally planned as part of a two-part film. But the story grew, so it became a separate movie. Lord and Miller returned to write the script with David Callaham. The plot focuses on a romance between Miles and Gwen Stacy / Spider-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld).

Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson directed Across the Spider-Verse. The film has many more Spider-People. These include Johnson, Oscar Isaac, Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya, and Karan Soni. Production faced some challenges. After a delay, Across the Spider-Verse opened in June 2023. It was the sixth highest-grossing film of the year, earning $690.9 million. The film was also nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (2027)

Work on Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse happened at the same time as Across the Spider-Verse. Sony first planned to release Beyond the Spider-Verse on March 29, 2024. But the film was delayed because of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. The studio plans to release the film on June 18, 2027.

Spin-off Projects

Because the Spider-Verse films were so successful, new spin-off projects are being made. These explore more of the Spider-Man world. Some completed projects are short films. The first, Spider-Ham: Caught in a Ham, was released in February 2019. It features John Mulaney as Spider-Ham. Another short, The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story, premiered in June 2023. It was later released on YouTube in March 2024. A Spider-Verse Story shows Miles dealing with stress in his personal life.

Upcoming projects include a Spider-Women spin-off and a Spider-Punk adaptation. Daniel Kaluuya is writing the script for the Spider-Punk film. The Spider-Women film will focus on Gwen and introduce Cindy Moon / Silk and Jessica Drew / Spider-Woman. In May 2023, reports said Sony was thinking about a live-action Miles Morales film. This would be made after Brand New Day and Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU)

Since 2018, Sony has released live-action films about other characters from Spider-Man's world. This is part of a larger project called Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU). The first film in this series was Venom (2018). It was followed by Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021) and Venom: The Last Dance (2024).

Other SSU films include Morbius (2022), Madame Web (2024), and Kraven the Hunter (2024). Sony stopped making new films for a while after Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter did not do well at the box office. The SSU films are loosely connected to other Spider-Man movies. However, Spider-Man himself does not usually appear, except for a brief mention of Peter's birth in Madame Web.

Fan-Made Spider-Man Films

Fans have made many of their own Spider-Man films. These show different ideas about the character. Donald F. Glut made the earliest known fan film in 1969. Spider-Man Versus Kraven the Hunter (1974) was a student project. Stan Lee liked it and allowed it to be shown, but not in theaters.

In 1992, Dan Poole made The Green Goblin's Last Stand. It was based on a famous comic book story. Poole used money from his job to make the film. He also did most of the stunts himself. Other fan films include the Turkish film 3 Dev Adam (1973), which showed Spider-Man as a villain.

Fan-made Spider-Man films continue to be made today. Italian Spiderman (2007) was a short film released on YouTube. It made fun of old Italian adventure movies. Spider-Man: Lotus (2023) told a story inspired by the director's high school experiences. Fans helped fund this film.
