The Seychelles national football team, also known as the Pirates, represents the island nation of Seychelles in international football matches. The team is managed by the Seychelles Football Federation (SFF). The SFF joined the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA in 1986. Their home games are played at the Stade Linité in Roche Caiman, near the capital city of Victoria. This stadium can hold up to 10,000 fans.

The Story of Seychelles Football

Early Days of Football

Football first came to Seychelles in the 1930s. The very first official competition, called the Challenge Cup, was held in 1936. In 1941, a championship started with five teams. Players competed in 60-minute matches, often without shoes.

Building the National Team

In 1969, the president of the Seychelles Football Federation decided to create a national team. Adrian Fisher, a coach from England, arrived in September to help organize football on the island. He made sure all players had shoes and introduced modern training methods. He also extended match times to 90 minutes.

The new national team played its first friendly matches in Kenya in April 1970. They drew 2–2 against Feisal F.C. and lost 1–2 to Mwengi at Mombasa Municipal Stadium. By the time Fisher left in 1973, the team had played six games against different clubs.

First International Matches

Seychelles played its first game against another national team on March 13, 1974. They faced Réunion in a friendly match and lost 0–2. Two years later, after Seychelles became an independent nation, they played Réunion again and lost 1–4.

In September 1977, the team played its first match against a team recognized by FIFA. They lost 1–2 to Mauritius during a tournament in Réunion. The Pirates celebrated their first victory the next year, beating Réunion 1–0 at home.

Competing in Tournaments

In 1979, Seychelles took part in their first tournament, the 1979 Indian Ocean Games. They lost their first game 3–0 to Réunion but then had a huge 9–0 win against Maldives. In the semi-final, they beat Mauritius 4–2 in a penalty shootout after a 1–1 draw. However, they lost 2–1 to Réunion in the final.

Seychelles did not get past the group stage at the 1985 Indian Ocean Games. On August 31, 1986, they played their first official competitive match recognized by FIFA and CAF. This was a qualification match for the 1987 All-Africa Games against Mauritius, which they lost 1–2. They also played in the 1988 African Cup of Nations qualifiers for the first time but lost 1–3 over two games to Mauritius.

At the 1990 Indian Ocean Games, the team suffered its biggest defeat ever, losing 0–6 to Madagascar in the semi-final. But they bounced back to win the bronze medal match against Comoros 3–1. Even though they hosted the next games in 1993, they lost all four matches and finished last.

New Coaches and Big Wins

After losing to Mauritius in the 1996 African Cup of Nations preliminary phase, Vojo Gardašević became the new coach. The Pirates then won third place again at the 1998 Indian Ocean Games. Two years later, they played in the World Cup qualifiers for the first time. They drew 1–1 against Namibia at Stade Linité, with a goal from Philip Zialor, but lost the second game 0–3.

Seychelles also lost 0–6 to Zimbabwe in the preliminary round of the 2000 African Cup of Nations. However, they did much better in the qualifiers for the 2004 African Cup of Nations. Under coaches Dominique Bathenay and then Michael Nees, they finished third in their group. They achieved two impressive home wins: 1–0 against Eritrea (goal by Roddy Victor) and 2–1 against a strong Zimbabwe team (goals by Alpha Baldé and Philip Zialor).

After this, they won a bronze medal at the 2003 Indian Ocean Games. They were later knocked out of the 2006 World Cup qualifiers by Zambia, losing 1–5 over two games.

Historic Win in 2011

In 2011, Seychelles hosted the 2011 Indian Ocean Island Games. They made history by winning the tournament for the first time, beating Mauritius in the final through a penalty shootout.

The rest of the 2010s were not as successful for The Pirates. A highlight was during the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualification, where they won 2–0 against Lesotho and drew 1–1 with Ethiopia. This helped them finish third in their four-team group.

FIFA Goal Programme Support

In 2006, a new technical center was opened in Mahé. This project received help from the FIFA Goal programme, costing about 750,000 USD. The president of Seychelles, James Michel, attended the opening. This center is home to the SFF headquarters, an auditorium, 20 bedrooms, massage rooms, changing rooms, and a restaurant. It is located next to the turf pitches that were also built with the Goal programme's help in 2003.
