History of Football in Seychelles
Football first came to Seychelles in the 1930s. The very first official football competition was the Challenge Cup in 1936. Later, in 1941, a championship started with five teams. Players used to play for 60 minutes and without shoes!
In 1969, the head of the Seychelles Football Federation wanted to create a national team. Adrian Fisher, a football coach, came to the island in September. He helped to organize football in Seychelles. He made sure players wore shoes. He also taught them new training methods and made matches 90 minutes long.
The new national team played its first friendly games in Kenya in April 1970. They tied 2–2 against Feisal F.C. and then lost 1–2 to Mwengi. When Fisher left in 1973, the team had played six games against different clubs.
First International Matches
Seychelles played their first match against another country's national team on March 13, 1974. They played against Réunion and lost 0–2. Two years later, after Seychelles became an independent country, they played Réunion again and lost 1–4.
In September 1977, they played their first game against a team recognized by FIFA. This was against Mauritius, and Seychelles lost 1–2. The team got its first win the next year, beating Réunion 1–0 at home.

In 1979, Seychelles played in their first big tournament, the 1979 Indian Ocean Games. They lost their first game 3–0 to Réunion. But then they had a huge win, beating Maldives 9–0! In the semi-final, they beat Mauritius in a penalty shootout. However, they lost 2–1 to Réunion in the final.
Seychelles did not do well in the 1985 Indian Ocean Games. On August 31, 1986, they played their first official match recognized by FIFA and CAF. This was a qualification match for the 1987 All-Africa Games against Mauritius, which they lost 1–2. They also played in the qualifiers for the 1988 African Cup of Nations for the first time, losing 1–3 over two games.
At the 1990 Indian Ocean Games, the team had its biggest loss ever, losing 0–6 to Madagascar. But they won the bronze medal match against Comoros 3–1. Even though they hosted the next games in 1993, they lost all four matches.
After losing to Mauritius in the 1996 African Cup of Nations qualifiers, Vojo Gardašević became the new coach. The Pirates won another bronze medal at the 1998 Indian Ocean Games. Two years later, they played in the World Cup qualifiers for the first time. They tied 1–1 with Namibia at home, but lost the second game 0–3.
Seychelles did better in the qualifiers for the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations. They finished third in their group. They had two great home wins: 1–0 against Eritrea and 2–1 against Zimbabwe. After this, they won a bronze medal at the 2003 Indian Ocean Games.
In 2011, Seychelles hosted the 2011 Indian Ocean Island Games. They won the tournament for the first time, beating Mauritius in the final on penalties!
The rest of the 2010s were not as successful for The Pirates. A highlight was a 2–0 win over Lesotho in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualification. They also tied 1–1 with Ethiopia.
FIFA Goal Programme
In 2006, a new football training center opened in Mahé. This was built with help from the FIFA Goal programme. The project cost about 750,000 US dollars. The president of Seychelles, James Michel, was there for the opening.
The center has the SFF main office, a meeting hall, 20 bedrooms, massage rooms, changing rooms, and a restaurant. It is right next to the turf pitches that were also put in place by the Goal programme in 2003. This center helps the team train and develop.
