The Korean Educational Broadcasting System (Korean: 한국교육방송공사, romanized: Hanguggyoyugbangsong-gongsa), or EBS, is a special TV and radio network in South Korea. Its main goal is to help people learn. EBS is unique because it's the only major South Korean network that doesn't have different channels for different regions. It started in the 1980s as part of another network, KBS. Then, in 1990, it became its own independent company.

How EBS Gets Its Money

Even though EBS is a public service, it gets most of its money from other places. A big part of its budget comes from selling textbooks and other learning materials. It also earns money from advertisements on its TV, radio, and internet channels. The rest of its funding comes from TV license fees, which are small payments people make for owning a TV. The government also gives EBS some money to help with its educational mission.

EBS Channels

EBS offers many different channels for learning and entertainment. Here are some of them:

  • EBS1 — This is the main TV channel. It shows documentaries, educational programs for young children, and shows for teens. You can find it on Channel 10.1.
  • EBS2 — This is EBS's second main TV channel. It's on Channel 10.2.
  • EBS FM — This is EBS's radio station. It mostly helps people learn new languages. Important listening tests for the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) are broadcast here every year.
  • EBS Plus 1 (subscription TV) — This channel focuses on helping high school students prepare for important tests like the CSAT. It offers programs that support what students learn in school.
  • EBS Plus 2 (subscription TV) — This channel is for "lifelong learning." It has many different programs for both younger and older viewers.
  • EBS English (subscription TV) — This channel is all about learning English. It has shows for kids from kindergarten all the way up to high school.
  • EBS Kids (subscription TV) — This channel is just for children. It shows fun and educational programs for younger audiences.

EBS also has a special channel called EBS America in the United States. This channel shares Korean culture, helps people learn the Korean language, and shows children's programs.
