Donald Trump became the 47th President of the United States on January 20, 2025. A president chooses people to help run the country. These people are called the president's cabinet. The president suggests who should be in the cabinet. Then, the United States Senate must approve these choices. This process is called "advice and consent."

The President's Cabinet
The cabinet is a group of important advisors to the president. Most cabinet members lead big government departments. For example, there's a Secretary of State who handles foreign affairs. These leaders must be approved by the United States Senate. The only cabinet member who is elected, not appointed, is the Vice President.
The president can also choose other officials to be part of the cabinet. These officials might lead other agencies or work in the President's Executive Office. The cabinet meets with the president in the Cabinet Room at the White House.
Since the Republican Party had a majority in the Senate, most of President Trump's choices for the cabinet were approved.
President Trump's team also created a new group called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This group was part of the President's Executive Office. It was not a full government department because those need approval from Congress. Elon Musk, a well-known businessman, helped with DOGE's work for a while. He left the government in May 2025 when his special contract ended.
