Threatened fauna of Australia facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Australia is home to many unique animals, but sadly, some are in danger of disappearing forever. These animals are called threatened fauna. This means they are at risk of becoming extinct, which is when a species completely dies out. This article talks about the animals listed as threatened under Australia's main environmental law, the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

Why Animals Become Threatened

Scientists believe that about 33 types of mammals, 24 birds, one reptile, and three frog species have already become extinct in Australia since the last Ice Age ended. This includes famous animals like the thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger).

In 2020, a special online report called the Threatened Mammal Index showed that the number of threatened mammals in Australia had dropped by more than a third in 20 years. However, the good news is that when people work hard to protect these animals, it really helps!

Another study in 2023 looked at species listed as threatened. It found that 23 species, including the Murray cod fish and the Flinders Ranges worm-lizard, might no longer need to be on the threatened list because their numbers have improved. This shows that conservation efforts can make a big difference.

Laws Protecting Threatened Species

Australia has laws to protect its amazing wildlife. The main law is the federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). This law helps protect Australia's environment, including its unique animals and special natural places.

Federal and State Laws

The EPBC Act uses classifications from the World Conservation Union (IUCN) to decide how threatened a species is. However, sometimes Australia's ranking for an animal might be different from the IUCN's.

Besides the federal law, each Australian state and territory also has its own laws to protect the environment and threatened species. These laws help in different ways:

  • They create protected areas like national parks.
  • They are specific threatened species laws.
  • They protect native vegetation (plants).
  • They manage fisheries to prevent overfishing.

List of Threatened Species

Here are some of the animals listed as threatened in Australia. They are grouped by how much danger they are in.

Extinct in the Wild

These animals no longer exist in their natural habitat. They might only be found in zoos or special breeding programs.
