1906 Intercalated Games |
Greece is a very important country in the history of the Olympic Games. It has taken part in every single Summer Olympic Games since they began in their modern form. Only four other countries can say the same! Greece has also competed in most of the Winter Olympic Games.
Greece has hosted the modern Olympics twice. Both times, the games were held in Athens, the capital city. This happened in 1896 and again in 2004.
Because the Ancient Olympic Games started in Olympia, Greece has a special role. At the opening ceremony of every Olympics, Greece's team always enters the stadium first. The only exception was in 2004, when they entered last as the host nation. Also, before each Games, the Olympic Flame is lit in Olympia. This ceremony follows old Greek traditions and starts the Olympic torch relay. The flag of Greece is always raised during the closing ceremony. It is raised along with the flags of the current host country and the next host country.
Greek athletes have won a total of 121 medals across 15 different sports. This places Greece 36th in the all-time Summer Olympics medal count. The sports where Greece has won the most medals are athletics (like running and jumping) and weightlifting. In weightlifting, Greece is one of the top 10 countries ever! Other sports where Greece has won many medals include gymnastics, shooting, and wrestling.
At the very first modern Olympics in 1896, Greece had its best performance. They finished second in gold medals and won the most medals overall. Greece also did well in the 1906 Intercalated Games, winning 35 medals. These games were once considered Olympics, but the IOC does not officially recognize them today. Greece has not won any medals at the Winter Olympic Games.

Hosting the Olympic Games
Greece has proudly hosted the Summer Olympic Games two times. The first time was in 1896, which was the very first modern Olympics. The second time was in 2004. Both events took place in Athens. Athens is one of only three cities, along with Los Angeles and Tokyo, to host the Olympics twice. London and Paris are the only cities to have hosted three times.
Games | Host city | Dates | Nations | Participants | Events |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1896 Summer Olympics | Athens | 6 – 15 April | 14 | 241 | 43 |
2004 Summer Olympics | Athens | 13 – 29 August | 201 | 10,625 | 301 |
Athens also hosted the 1906 Intercalated Games. At the time, these games were thought of as Olympic Games by the International Olympic Committee.

Additional Medals from 1896 (Disputed)
There is some confusion about certain results and medals from the first Summer Olympics in 1896. The Hellenic Olympic Committee (Greece's Olympic group) lists some different results and extra medals for Greece on its website. These are not the same as what the IOC (International Olympic Committee) officially recognizes. They are listed here separately.

Olympic Logos and Mottos from Greece
1896 Summer Olympics
In 1896, the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, the capital of Greece. These Games brought back the ancient Games that used to happen every four years in Olympia. In ancient times, athletes from all Greek city-states took part.
Because of this history, Greece is always the first country to enter the stadium during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics.
2004 Summer Olympics
The 2004 Summer Olympics were mainly held in Athens. Some events also took place in other Greek cities like Thessaloniki, Patras, Volos, and Heraklion.
The motto for these Games was Welcome Home (which is "Καλώς ήρθατε σπίτι" in Greek). The 2004 logo showed an olive tree branch (called a kotinos). It had the colors of the modern Greek flag. The olive tree was a symbol of Athens. The kotinos also represented the Olympic spirit, as it was the only prize athletes received in Olympia during the ancient Games. This logo was first shown in 1999.
