Sir Elton Hercules John (born Reginald Kenneth Dwight; 25 March 1947) is a British singer, songwriter, and pianist. He is famous for his amazing music and exciting stage shows, especially in the 1970s. His partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin is one of the most successful in music history.
Elton John grew up in Pinner, England. He started playing piano very young and even won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. In 1962, he formed a band called Bluesology. Later, in 1967, he decided to start a solo career and met Bernie Taupin. They wrote songs for other artists for two years. In 1969, Elton John released his first album, Empty Sky. A year later, he formed the Elton John Band and released his first big hit song, "Your Song".
The 1970s were a huge success for Elton John. He released many chart-topping albums like Honky Château (1972) and Rock of the Westies (1975). He continued to have hit songs and albums in the 1980s and 1990s and still records new music today. He has also written music for popular films and musicals, including The Lion King (1994), Aida (2000), and Billy Elliot the Musical (2005). His last tour, Farewell Yellow Brick Road (2018–2023), became one of the highest-earning tours ever. His life story was even made into a movie called Rocketman in 2019.
Elton John is also well-known for his charity work, especially in the fight against AIDS. He started the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992, which has raised hundreds of millions of pounds. He also hosted an annual party for his AIDS Foundation during the Academy Awards. From 1976 to 1987, and again from 1997 to 2002, he was the chairman and director of Watford Football Club. He is now an honorary life president of the club. In 2014, he married his partner, the Canadian filmmaker David Furnish.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on 25 March 1947, in Pinner, England. He was the only child of Sheila Eileen and Stanley Dwight. He grew up in Pinner with his grandparents. He went to Pinner Wood Junior School, Reddiford School, and Pinner County Grammar School. He left school at 17 to focus on music.
His father, who was in the Royal Air Force, wanted him to have a more traditional job, like banking. But Elton John loved music. Both his parents enjoyed music, and his father played the trumpet in a band. This meant Elton John heard a lot of popular music growing up.
Elton John started playing his grandmother's piano when he was very young. Within a year, he could play songs by ear. He began formal piano lessons at age seven. He was very talented at school, even composing melodies. At age 11, he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. One of his teachers said he could play a four-page piece by George Frideric Handel perfectly after hearing it just once.

For five years, Elton John attended Saturday classes at the Academy in London. He enjoyed playing classical music by Frédéric Chopin and Johann Sebastian Bach and singing in the choir. However, he admitted he wasn't always a very hardworking student. He sometimes skipped classes to ride the London Underground. Despite this, his teachers said he was a "model student." He left the Academy before taking his final exams.
His mother was more lively than his father. Since his father was often away, Elton John was mostly raised by his mother and grandmother. His parents divorced when he was 14. His mother then married Fred Farebrother, who was a kind and supportive stepfather. Elton John called him "Derf" (Fred spelled backward). They moved to a new flat where Elton John wrote many of the songs that started his famous career. He lived there until he had four albums in the American Top 40 charts at the same time.
Music Career Highlights
Starting Out: Pubs and Songwriting
At 15, Elton John became a pianist at a pub called the Northwood Hills Hotel. He played popular songs and his own music. He was known as "Reggie" back then. He started wearing horn-rimmed glasses to look like his idol, Buddy Holly.
In 1962, he formed the band Bluesology. During the day, he ran errands for a music company. At night, he played solo gigs and performed with Bluesology. By the mid-1960s, Bluesology was backing American soul and R&B artists like the Isley Brothers.
In 1967, Elton John answered an advertisement for new talent. At his first meeting, he received an envelope of lyrics written by Bernie Taupin, who had answered the same ad. Elton John wrote music for the lyrics and sent it to Taupin. This was the start of their amazing partnership, which continues today. Six months later, he started using the name Elton John, inspired by two members of Bluesology: saxophonist Elton Dean and singer Long John Baldry. He legally changed his name to Elton Hercules John in 1972.
In 1968, John and Taupin became staff songwriters for DJM Records. For two years, they wrote songs for other artists. Taupin would write lyrics quickly, and John would compose music for them just as fast.
Early Albums and First Hits
In 1969, Elton John recorded his first album, Empty Sky. For his next album, Elton John, released in 1970, he worked with producer Gus Dudgeon. This album set the style for his future music, combining powerful rock songs with heartfelt ballads. The album's second single, "Your Song", became his first big hit, reaching the top 10 in both the UK and the US. The album itself also became a hit.
Elton John's first concert in America was a huge success at the Troubadour in Los Angeles in August 1970. His album Tumbleweed Connection was released later that year and also did very well.
In 1971, John and Taupin wrote the soundtrack for the film Friends and released the album Madman Across the Water, which included "Tiny Dancer". In 1972, Davey Johnstone joined the Elton John Band on guitar. That year, Honky Château became Elton John's first number one album in the US. It included the hit songs "Rocket Man" and "Honky Cat".
His album Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player came out in early 1973 and reached number one in many countries. It featured "Crocodile Rock", his first US number one song, and "Daniel". The double-album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, released in October 1973, was praised by critics and topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. It included hits like "Bennie and the Jets", "Candle in the Wind", and "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting".
Forming His Own Label and Continued Success
Elton John started his own record label, The Rocket Record Company, in 1974. He signed other artists to it, like Neil Sedaka and Kiki Dee. Instead of releasing his own music on Rocket, he signed a big contract with MCA Records. In 1974, MCA released Elton John's Greatest Hits, which became a number one album in the UK and US and sold millions of copies.
In 1974, Elton John worked with John Lennon on a cover of the Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", which became a number one hit in the US. John Lennon also appeared on Elton John's song "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night". Later that year, they performed together at Madison Square Garden in New York. The album Caribou was also released in 1974 and topped the charts in several countries.
Pete Townshend of the Who asked Elton John to play a part in the 1975 film Tommy and perform the song "Pinball Wizard". Elton John's version became a hit in the UK. He was known for his elaborate stage costumes, including platform boots.
The 1975 album Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy was special because it was the first album to debut at number one in the US. It told the story of Elton John and Bernie Taupin's early days as struggling musicians. The hit song from this album, "Someone Saved My Life Tonight", was about an important moment in Elton John's life.
His next album, Rock of the Westies, also debuted at number one in the US. Elton John's stage outfits became even more wild, including ostrich feathers and costumes like the Statue of Liberty. In 1975, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The album featured his fifth US number one single, "Island Girl". In 1976, his duet with Kiki Dee, "Don't Go Breaking My Heart", became a number one hit in many countries.
Between 1972 and 1975, Elton John had seven albums in a row reach number one in the US, which was a record. Many critics consider this period his most successful.
