United States Fish and Wildlife Service list of endangered mammals and birds facts for kids
This article is about some amazing animals – both mammals and birds – that are considered endangered or threatened by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. This list includes animals found in the U.S. and its territories, as well as those living in other parts of the world. It doesn't cover fish, amphibians, reptiles, plants, or invertebrates, just mammals and birds.
When an animal is listed, its status is shown as:
- E for Endangered: This means the animal is in danger of disappearing forever.
- T for Threatened: This means the animal is likely to become endangered in the near future.
Sometimes, an animal might be listed as E(S/A) or T(S/A) if it looks very similar to an endangered or threatened species, and needs protection too.
The main goal of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's endangered species program is to find, protect, and help these special animals recover so they can thrive again.
