Have you ever seen a flag that tells a story? In Puerto Rico, each of its 78 towns, called municipalities, has its very own flag! These flags are super special because they show off what makes each town unique. They represent the history, the people, and even the land of that area.
What are Municipal Flags?
Every single town in Puerto Rico, including the islands of Culebra and Vieques, has chosen a flag to represent itself. Think of it like a team jersey for a town! The colors and designs on these flags are all different.
Many flags get their look from the town's coat of arms. A coat of arms is like a special symbol or emblem that has a lot of meaning. It often includes pictures of things important to the area, like a special bird, animal, or even a crop that grows there.
Stories Behind the Flags
Many of Puerto Rico's town flags honor the Caciques. These were the leaders of the Taíno tribes, the native people who lived on the island before the Spanish arrived. These Caciques ruled the land where the towns now stand.
For example, the flag of Utuado has a special Taíno Sun symbol. This is to honor the great Taíno Cacique Agüeybaná. His name actually means "The Great Sun"!
Other flags, like the one for San Germán, have a mural crown. This crown is a way to pay tribute to Spain and the Spanish settlers who first came to the area. It shows the town's connection to its Spanish past.
A special case is the town of Lares. In 1952, the town decided to use the "Revolutionary Flag of Lares" as its official flag. This flag is important because it represents a historical event where people fought for freedom.
