Saltpeter Cave

Saltpeter Cave is located within the beautiful Carter Caves State Resort Park near Olive Hill. This cave was important in the past because saltpeter (potassium nitrate) was mined from it. Saltpeter was a key ingredient for making gunpowder, especially during times like the War of 1812 and the American Civil War. The cave was added to the National Register on July 24, 2001, recognizing its role in history.

A Site That Was Once Listed

Sometimes, a historic place might be removed from the National Register if it is no longer standing or if its historical importance changes. Carter County had one such site.

Sellers House and Laboratory Building

The Sellers House and Laboratory Building was once located south of Grahn. It was added to the National Register in 1974. Sadly, the house was destroyed by fire just one month after it was listed. The laboratory building was taken apart in 1976 and moved to a museum in New England. However, a tornado heavily damaged the museum in 1979, and most of the laboratory parts were lost. Because of these events, the Sellers House and Laboratory Building was removed from the National Register.
