Watermills are amazing machines that use the power of flowing water to do work! Long ago, before steam power became popular, watermills were super important in Britain. People needed a lot of power for different jobs, and watermills provided it. It's thought that there were over 10,000 watermills across the country back then. Most of them were used to grind flour from corn, but they also helped with almost any industrial task that needed more power than people or animals could provide. Sometimes, if there wasn't a good river, a windmill might be used instead.

Today, only a small number of these old mills are still around. Many have been turned into homes or offices. But some have been saved and restored as museums. At these museums, you can often see the mill working, just like it did hundreds of years ago! It's a great way to learn about history and how people used to live and work.
