Kansas counties

Kansas is home to over 1,400 amazing places listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These special spots include old buildings, important sites, historic neighborhoods (called districts), and even unique objects. You can find these listings in 101 of Kansas's 105 counties!

The National Register of Historic Places is like a special list of places across the United States that are important to history. When a place is on this list, it means it's recognized for its historical, architectural, or archaeological value. This helps protect these places so future generations can learn from them.

Contents

What are Historic Places?

Historic places can be many things. They might be:

  • Buildings: Like old courthouses, schools, or homes.
  • Sites: These could be battlefields, ancient villages, or important natural areas.
  • Districts: A group of buildings or sites that together tell a story about a neighborhood or area.
  • Objects: Sometimes, even statues or monuments are listed.

These listings help us understand the past and keep important parts of our heritage safe.

Historic Spots Across Kansas

Kansas has many historic places! Some counties have a lot, while others have just a few. For example, Sedgwick County and Shawnee County have many listings. This is because they have big cities with lots of history. Other counties might have fewer, but each one is still very special.

The list below shows some of the historic places in different Kansas counties. If a county name is in italic and links to a new page, it means there are many more listings to explore there!
