List of lighthouses in Australia facts for kids
Australia has a very long coastline, stretching over 25,760 kilometres (16,010 mi)! Along this huge coast, you'll find more than 350 lighthouses and other helpful navigation lights. There's even one special lighthouse, the Point Malcolm lighthouse, that's located inland, not on the coast!
The very first lighthouse in Australia was the Macquarie Lighthouse. It was first lit way back in 1793, using a simple tripod with wood and coal fires to create light. Fast forward many years, the last lighthouse to have people working in it was the Maatsuyker Island Lighthouse off Tasmania. It became automatic in 1996, meaning machines took over the job of keeping the light shining.

Finding Lighthouses
Lighthouses and lightvessels (which are like floating lighthouses) in Australia are listed in special books and websites. These lists help ships and boats know where the lighthouses are. For example, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency has a "List of Lights" (publication 111), and the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office lists them in their "Admiralty List of Lights & Fog Signals."
You can also find Australian lighthouses listed by their location on "The Lighthouse Directory" website. They are grouped by different areas:
- Coral Sea Islands Territory
- New South Wales, including Cape St George Lighthouse (which is in Jervis Bay Territory)
- Northern Territory
- Queensland's East Coast (from Townsville southwards)
- Far North Queensland
- South Australia
- Tasmania
- Victoria
- Western Australia
Another group called "Lighthouses of Australia Inc." also lists lighthouses, but they organize them by state:
- Western Australia
- Northern Territory
- South Australia
- Queensland
- New South Wales
- Victoria
- Tasmania
There are other lists too, like the one on "Australian Lighthouses" and "SeaSide Lights." To be included in this article, a lighthouse must be active and appear on at least one of these main lists. Sometimes, older lighthouses are included if they are mentioned in other reliable sources.
Who Looks After Lighthouses?
Most lighthouses and lightvessels in Australia are looked after by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). However, AMSA usually only manages the lighting equipment inside the lighthouse. Local groups often manage the lighthouse buildings and the land around them, which are sometimes parks.
For example:
- In New South Wales, the lighthouses and their surrounding areas are mostly managed by the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water or the New South Wales Department of Lands.
- In the Northern Territory, some lighthouses are managed by the Darwin Port Corporation.
- In South Australia, some are managed by the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources.
- In Tasmania, the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service looks after many lighthouses.
- In Victoria, port lights are maintained by the Port of Melbourne Corporation in the Melbourne area and by the Victorian Regional Channels Authority elsewhere. Parks are mostly managed by Parks Victoria.
- In Western Australia, some lighthouses are managed by the Department of Environment and Conservation.

New South Wales
New South Wales has several "sibling" lighthouses. These are lighthouses designed by the same architect around the same time, making them look very similar. Some examples include:
- Wollongong Breakwater Lighthouse and Warden Head Light, built in 1872–1873.
- Crowdy Head Light, Fingal Head Light, Clarence River Light (the original one, now gone), Tacking Point Lighthouse and Richmond River Light, all designed by James Barnet in 1878.
- Point Perpendicular Light (1899), Cape Byron Light (1901) and Norah Head Light (1903), designed by Charles Assinder Harding.
- The "Disney Castles": Grotto Point Light, Parriwi Head Light, Vaucluse Bay Range Front Light and Vaucluse Bay Range Rear Light, built in 1910–1911 by Maurice Festu.
- The "Wedding Cakes": Eastern Channel Pile Light and Western Channel Pile Light, built in 1924.

Northern Territory
Many lighthouses in the Northern Territory were built during a special time called the "Golden Age of Australian Lighthouses," between 1913 and 1920. These include Cape Don Light, East Vernon Light, Emery Point Light, Cape Hotham Light and Cape Fourcroy.
Three of these, Cape Hotham Light, Emery Point Light and Cape Fourcroy Light, are like "siblings." They are almost identical white, square, skeletal towers. They also flash their lights in a similar way: three flashes every 15 seconds.

Queensland
Most lighthouses in Queensland were built in specific groups:
- Two lighthouses were made from bolted, pre-made cast iron pieces: Sandy Cape Light and Bustard Head Light.
- Eight lighthouses were built with a hardwood frame covered in corrugated iron: Little Sea Hill Light, Grassy Hill Light, Goods Island Light, Bay Rock Light, Old Caloundra Light, North Point Hummock Light (now gone), Gatcombe Head Light (now gone) and Bulwer Island Light.
- Seven concrete towers were put up between 1964 and 1979: Cape Capricorn Light, New Caloundra Light, Point Danger Light, New Burnett Heads Light, Fitzroy Island Light, Point Cartwright Light and Archer Point Light.
