This article explores where past presidents and vice presidents of the United States are buried. These important leaders are laid to rest in 23 different states and in Washington, D.C..
Since the office of president began in 1789, 45 people have held the job. Of these, 40 have passed away. The state with the most presidential burial sites is Virginia, with seven. For vice presidents, 50 people have served since 1789, and 43 of them have died. New York has the most vice-presidential burial sites, with 10.
Fifteen people have served as both president and vice president. Of these, 14 have died, and their burial places are listed in both tables below. In total, 80 people have held one or both of these high offices, and 69 of them have died.
