This map shows where armed conflicts are happening around the world. The colors tell you how many people have died in battles in the past year:      Big Wars (10,000+ deaths)      Wars (1,000–9,999 deaths)      Smaller Conflicts (100–999 deaths)      Small Clashes (1–99 deaths)

This page lists the armed conflicts happening right now around the world. An armed conflict means that two or more organized groups are fighting each other using weapons. These groups can be governments or other armed groups.

What Makes a Conflict "Ongoing"?

This chart shows how many people died in the 17 deadliest conflicts between 2015 and 2020.

This list includes conflicts that are still happening and shows how many people have died because of them. Here are the main rules for what gets included:

• An armed conflict involves fighting between at least two organized groups, whether they are government armies or other armed groups.
• We count deaths from battles, including both soldiers and civilians who were directly targeted. We only count deaths that happened in the current or last year.
• A conflict is listed if at least 100 people have died in total, and at least 1 person has died in the current or last year.
• Sometimes, it's hard to know the exact number of deaths. A plus sign (like "455+") means that at least that many people have died.
• The "Location" column shows the main countries where the fighting is happening. If a place is in italics, it means it's a disputed territory or a state that isn't fully recognized by everyone.
• This list does not include regular crime or protests unless there is serious fighting involving military or armed groups.

Big Wars: Over 10,000 Deaths

These conflicts have caused at least 10,000 direct deaths in battles during the current or previous year.

Serious Conflicts: 1,000 to 9,999 Deaths

These conflicts have caused between 1,000 and 9,999 direct deaths in the current or previous year. Experts often call these "wars."

Smaller Conflicts: 100 to 999 Deaths

These conflicts have caused between 100 and 999 direct deaths in the current or previous year.

Small Clashes: Fewer Than 100 Deaths

These conflicts have caused fewer than 100 direct deaths in the current or previous year.
