British Columbia (often called BC) is a large province on the west coast of Canada. It's famous for its amazing mountains, forests, and, of course, its many beautiful lakes! These lakes are important for many reasons. They provide homes for animals, places for people to have fun, and even sources of power. This article gives you a look at some of the biggest and most well-known lakes in BC.
British Columbia's Biggest Lakes
British Columbia has thousands of lakes, but some are much larger than others. The table below shows the biggest lakes in BC, each covering an area of more than 400 square kilometers (about 154 square miles).

- Williston Lake is the largest lake in British Columbia. It's actually a man-made lake, also called a reservoir. It was created in 1968 when the W. A. C. Bennett Dam was built on the Peace River.
- Nechako Reservoir is another large reservoir in BC. It was created in the 1950s to provide hydroelectric power.
- Atlin Lake is a natural lake that stretches across the border into Yukon. It's known for its beautiful, clear waters and surrounding mountains.
- Babine Lake is the longest natural lake in British Columbia. It's famous for its sockeye salmon runs, which are very important for local wildlife and fishing.
- Kootenay Lake is a long, narrow lake in southeastern BC. It's surrounded by mountains and is a popular spot for recreation.
