Extended periodic table facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The extended periodic table is a special version of the periodic table that is much longer than the one you usually see. It has extra spaces for elements that are very heavy, called transactinide elements.

In a regular periodic table, some elements called inner transition metals are usually shown in two rows at the bottom. But in the extended periodic table, these elements are placed right in the middle, between Group 2 and Group 3. This makes the table much wider!

What is the Periodic Table?

The periodic table is a chart that organizes all the known chemical elements. It helps scientists understand how elements are related. Elements are arranged by their atomic number, which is the number of protons in an atom.

Why an Extended Table?

Scientists are always looking for new elements. Some elements are so heavy that they don't fit neatly into the standard periodic table. The extended periodic table makes room for these superheavy elements. It also shows where elements with even higher atomic numbers might go in the future.

Inner Transition Metals Explained

  • Lanthanides: These are elements from lanthanum (La) to lutetium (Lu). They are often used in things like magnets and lasers.
  • Actinides: These elements range from actinium (Ac) to lawrencium (Lr). Many actinides are radioactive, like uranium, which is used in nuclear power.

Superheavy Elements

Superheavy elements are elements with very high atomic numbers, usually 104 and above. They are made in labs and are very unstable. This means they exist for only a tiny fraction of a second. Scientists are still trying to discover and confirm more of these elements. The extended table helps predict their properties.
