Gadolinium
A piece of Gadolinium.

Gadolinium is a special kind of chemical element. Its chemical symbol is Gd. Every element has an atomic number, and for Gadolinium, it's 64. It belongs to a group of elements called the Lanthanides. These are also known as rare earth elements.

Gadolinium is a shiny, silvery-white metal. It is also malleable, which means you can hammer it into thin sheets without it breaking. It is also ductile, meaning you can pull it into a thin wire.

What is Gadolinium Used For?

Gadolinium is mostly used in special chemical forms called compounds. These compounds are important for making old-style color televisions and for a medical test called MRI.

Gadolinium in Old TVs

In older color televisions, the ones that were big and bulky (not flat screens), tiny dots called pixels made up the picture. Some of these pixels contained gadolinium compounds. When tiny particles called electrons hit these compounds, they would glow and give off light. This is how the TV screen showed colors.

Gadolinium in MRI Scans

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a very important tool in medicine. Doctors use it to take detailed pictures of the inside of your body. Gadolinium compounds are used as "contrast agents" in MRI scans.

When a patient gets an MRI, sometimes a small amount of a gadolinium compound is given to them. This compound helps make the pictures much clearer. It highlights the differences in how much water is in different parts of the body. This makes it easier for doctors to see things like organs, blood vessels, or any problems.
