Transition metal facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts
Periodic table
Transition metals are the pink elements in the middle of this periodic table.

The transition metals are a special group of metals found right in the middle of the periodic table. They are located between the alkaline earth metals (like beryllium) on the left and the boron group elements on the right. The name "transition element" was first used for them in 1921.

What Makes Them Special?

Transition metals have many interesting features that set them apart. They are generally harder and less reactive than the alkaline earth metals. They are also tougher than the post-transition metals.

Colorful Compounds

One cool thing about transition metals is that they often form very colorful chemical compounds when they mix with other elements. Think about the bright colors you see in some paints or gemstones – many of these colors come from transition metals!

Multiple Oxidation States

Most of these metals can form more than one oxidation state. This means they can combine with other elements in different ways, making them very versatile in chemical reactions.

Good Conductors

Just like other metals, transition metals are excellent electrical conductors. This means electricity can flow through them easily, which is why they are used in many electronic devices and wires.

Transition Metals and Your Health

Some transition metals are super important for keeping humans healthy.

  • Iron: You need iron for your blood to carry oxygen.
  • Zinc: Zinc helps your immune system work well and helps you grow.
  • Chromium: Chromium helps your body use sugar properly.

However, some transition metals can be harmful if you have too much of them. For example, cadmium and mercury can be bad for your body. Other metals, like gold or silver, don't really help or harm us when they are in their pure form.

There are more transition metals than any other group of elements in the periodic table!

Appearance of Transition Metals

While their compounds can be very colorful, only a few pure transition metals actually have a strong color. Most of them are shiny silver-gray or silver-bluish.
