List of Irish-American Medal of Honor recipients facts for kids
The Medal of Honor is the highest award for bravery in the American military. It's given to soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines who show amazing courage and risk their lives in battle against an enemy. The President of the United States gives out this medal on behalf of Congress.
Many brave Irish-Americans have received the Medal of Honor. In fact, out of all the Medals of Honor given until September 2009, about 2,021 (58%) went to Irish-American heroes. This is more than twice the number given to any other group! Also, 257 people born in Ireland have received this medal, which is more than half of all foreign-born recipients. There's even a special monument for these Irish-born heroes at the Medal of Honor Grove in Valley Forge.
The first Irish-American to officially receive the Medal of Honor was Michael Madden for his actions in the American Civil War. However, the earliest act for which the medal was awarded was by Irish-American U.S. Army Assistant Surgeon Bernard J.D. Irwin in February 1861. His medal was given much later than Madden's.

About the Medal of Honor
The Medal of Honor was first created during the American Civil War. It is the highest military award given by the United States government. To earn it, a person must show incredible bravery and risk their own life beyond what is expected, while fighting an enemy. Because of how special and dangerous these actions are, the medal is often given out after the person has passed away.
