Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The boron group is a special family of elements found on the periodic table. It's also known as Group 13. Most elements in this group are soft metals, but one is different: boron. Boron is a semimetal, which means it has properties of both metals and non-metals.

Meet the Boron Group Elements

This group has six interesting elements:

  • Boron: This element is a brittle, hard, and black semimetal. It's used in things like heat-resistant glass and cleaning products.
  • Aluminium: A very common, soft, and silvery metal. You see it everywhere, from soda cans to airplane parts!
  • Gallium: This silvery metal melts very easily, even in your hand! It's used in electronics like LEDs.
  • Indium: A soft, silvery metal often used in touchscreens and solar panels.
  • Thallium: This is a very soft metal. It is also highly toxic, so it must be handled with great care.
  • Nihonium: This element is man-made and very unstable. Scientists create it in laboratories.
