The Miss Universe 2022 competition was the 71st time this big event happened. It took place in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. The grand finale was held on January 14, 2023.
At the end of the exciting night, Harnaaz Sandhu from India crowned R'Bonney Gabriel from the United States as the new Miss Universe 2022. This was a special win for the United States. It was their first victory in ten years. It was also the ninth time the country won the Miss Universe title. R'Bonney Gabriel was the oldest person to win the crown. She was older than Andrea Meza from Mexico, who won in 2020.
Contestants from 83 different countries and places joined the competition. The show was hosted by Jeannie Mai and Olivia Culpo. Olivia Culpo was Miss Universe 2012. Catriona Gray, who was Miss Universe 2018, and Zuri Hall reported from backstage.
This competition was the first one under new ownership. A company from Thailand, JKN Global Group, bought the Miss Universe Organization. This happened in October 2022. The show was streamed online for the first time by The Roku Channel in the U.S.

About the Competition
Where and When It Happened

In September 2022, news came out that the Miss Universe 2022 event would be in early 2023. This was to avoid clashing with the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The World Cup took place in November and December 2022.
The Miss Universe Organization (MUO) confirmed the new date. They announced that the pageant would be on January 14, 2023. The chosen location was the New Orleans Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. This was the fourth time the Miss Universe event happened in the year after its title. This also happened in 2014, 2016, and 2020.
Choosing the Contestants
Eighty-three young women from different countries competed for the title. Some of these contestants were chosen in a special way. They might have been a runner-up in their home country's pageant. Or they were picked through a special selection process.
Tashi Choden from Bhutan made history. She became the second openly lesbian contestant in Miss Universe. The first was Swe Zin Htet from Myanmar in 2019.
Contestant Changes
Sometimes, a contestant needs to be replaced. For example, Chloe Powery-Doxey represented the Cayman Islands. She was the first runner-up in her national pageant. The original winner, Tiffany Conolly, was replaced due to a situation. Floriane Bascou, the first runner-up of Miss France 2022, also stepped in. The original winner, Diane Leyre, felt she didn't have enough time to get ready. Camila Sanabria from Bolivia was another replacement. She was the first runner-up of Miss Bolivia 2022. The original winner, Fernanda Pavisic, was replaced because she made fun of other contestants online.
New, Returning, and Missing Countries
The 2022 competition welcomed Bhutan for the very first time. Several countries returned after not competing for a few years. These included Angola, Belize, Indonesia, and Switzerland.
Some countries that competed in previous years did not send a contestant this time. This happened for countries like Denmark, Hungary, and Ireland.

Competition Steps
The Miss Universe Organization made some changes to the competition this year. It was thought that 20 semifinalists would be chosen. However, because of the show's time limit, only 16 semifinalists were picked. This was the same number as in 2021.
The first 15 semifinalists were chosen based on early rounds. These rounds included swimsuit, evening gown, and interviews. Fans could also vote online for one more contestant to join the top 16.
These 16 semifinalists then competed in swimsuit and evening gown again. After that, only five finalists were chosen. These five answered questions from the judges. Then, the top three were announced. The final three contestants gave a short speech. After their speeches, Miss Universe 2022 and her two runners-up were announced.
The Judges
A special group of people decided who would win. These judges included former Miss Universe winners and other famous people. They watched all the contestants closely.
Here are some of the judges:
- Ximena Navarrete – Miss Universe 2010 from Mexico
- Big Freedia – A famous American rapper
- Mara Martin – An American model and business owner
- Wendy Fitzwilliam – Miss Universe 1998 from Trinidad and Tobago
- Emily Austin – An American journalist and social media star
- Olivia Quido – CEO of O Skin Med Spa
- Myrka Dellanos – An American TV host and journalist
- Sweta Patel – A vice president at Roku
- Olivia Jordan – Miss USA 2015 (she was only a judge for the preliminary rounds)
- Kathleen Ventrella – Chief marketing officer of ImpactWayv (also only a preliminary judge)
