Future Stadiums and Exciting Plans
Football stadiums are always changing! Some new stadiums are being built, and others are getting bigger or being updated. Here are some of the exciting plans for stadiums in England:
Stadium | Expected Capacity |
Club | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
New Trafford Stadium (new build) | 100,000 | Manchester United | Manchester United announced plans in March 2025 for a brand new stadium to replace their current home, Old Trafford. |
Leazes Park Stadium (new build) | c. 65,000 | Newcastle United | Newcastle United is thinking about building a new stadium to replace St James' Park. It might be ready around 2031. |
New Birmingham City Stadium (new build) | c. 62,000 | Birmingham City | In April 2024, Birmingham City bought land to build a huge 62,000-seat stadium. It will also have a "Sports Quarter" for all the club's teams and training. They hope it will be ready for the 2029–30 season. |
City of Manchester Stadium (redevelopment) (under construction) | 61,474 | Manchester City | This stadium has been growing! The first parts of its expansion finished in 2015, making it bigger. More work started in 2023 to add even more seats. The goal is to finish by 2026, and the stadium will hold over 61,474 fans. |
Stamford Bridge (redevelopment) | c. 60,000 | Chelsea | Chelsea wanted to make Stamford Bridge bigger, to hold 60,000 people. Plans were approved in 2015 but stopped in 2018 due to some local concerns. Now, with new owners, Chelsea is still looking into ways to rebuild or expand the stadium. They even bought nearby land in October 2023. |
Elland Road (redevelopment) | c. 53,000 | Leeds United | Leeds United has plans to expand Elland Road in stages. This would make it one of England's top stadiums. The expansion would help it meet special UEFA standards. |
Villa Park (redevelopment) | c. 50,000 | Aston Villa | In January 2023, plans were approved to rebuild the North Stand at Villa Park. This would add many more seats and new facilities like a hotel and museum. The stadium's capacity would reach about 50,000. However, in January 2024, the club decided to put these plans on hold. They didn't want to reduce stadium capacity during construction. |
King Power Stadium (redevelopment) | c. 40,000 | Leicester City | Leicester City has plans to expand King Power Stadium and build new things around it, like a fan zone and a hotel. These plans were fully approved in December 2023. The start date depends on getting enough money for the project. |
City Ground (redevelopment) | c. 38,000 | Nottingham Forest | Nottingham Forest got approval in February 2019 to extend their lease on City Ground. This means they can now plan to rebuild the Peter Taylor Stand and improve other areas. The stadium's capacity could grow to 38,000. The plans were approved in July 2022, but work hasn't started yet. |
Selhurst Park (redevelopment) | c. 34,000 | Crystal Palace | Crystal Palace had plans approved in April 2018 for a new Main Stand. The project was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and other changes. Revised plans were approved again in October 2022, but the club is still waiting for final permission to begin construction. |
Power Court Stadium (new build) | c. 23,500 | Luton Town | Plans for a new stadium in Luton were approved in January 2019. It was first planned to hold 17,500 people. Because Luton Town joined the Premier League in 2023, the plans were updated for a larger stadium, possibly holding 23,500 fans. The project has been delayed, but it's still in the works. |
New Oxford United Stadium (new build) | c. 16,000 | Oxford United | Oxford United is planning a new stadium in Kidlington. Their current stadium lease ends in 2026, so they hope the new one will be ready for the 2025–26 season. They have an agreement for land near a train station, and plans are still moving forward. |
Northfleet Community Stadium (new build) | c. 8,000 | Ebbsfleet United | A new stadium is planned for Northfleet as part of a bigger town update. Plans were approved in April 2024. Construction is set to start in September 2024 and finish by August 2026, possibly in time for the 2025-26 season. |
Eco Park (new build) | c. 5,000 | Forest Green Rovers | Forest Green Rovers is planning a new stadium called Eco Park. It was designed by Zaha Hadid and is expected to be the world's first stadium made mostly of wood! Planning permission was given in December 2019. |
