List of lakes of Ohio facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ohio is home to many beautiful lakes! This article lists some of the most important lakes in the state.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says Ohio has about 50,000 lakes and small ponds. These cover a huge area of 200,000 acres. About 2,200 of these lakes are 5 acres (2 hectares) or larger. Many of these larger lakes are open to the public. You can go swimming, fishing, or boating in some of them.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also counts lakes. They found about 5,130 lakes in Ohio. The EPA's count might be lower because their maps don't show all the tiny ponds.

Ohio has two main types of lakes:

  • Natural lakes: These were formed by nature, mostly by glaciers long ago.
  • Artificial lakes: These are also called reservoirs. They were built by people, often by damming rivers.

There are many more artificial lakes than natural ones in Ohio. Artificial lakes also cover a much larger area.

Ohio's Great Lake: Lake Erie

One of the five famous Great Lakes is partly in Ohio. This is Lake Erie. It's a very large and important lake for the state.
