List of MPs elected in the 1710 British general election facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The 1710 British General Election was a big event in October of that year. It was when people across Great Britain voted for their representatives to join the Parliament of Great Britain. These representatives are called Members of Parliament, or MPs for short.

This list shows the 558 MPs who were chosen to represent 314 different areas (called constituencies) in the 1710 election. This Parliament was the third one for Great Britain. The list also includes any new MPs who joined later through special elections called by-elections.

1st Parliament (1705-1708)
2nd Parliament (1708)
3rd Parliament (1710)
4th Parliament (1713)
5th Parliament (1715)

What is Parliament?

Parliament is like a big meeting place where elected people make laws and discuss important issues for the country. In 1710, Great Britain had two main political groups: the Whigs and the Tories. They often disagreed on how the country should be run.

Understanding the List

Each area, or constituency, elected one or two MPs. Sometimes, an MP might leave Parliament early because they:

  • Died: Sadly, they passed away.
  • Took office: They got a new job in the government that meant they couldn't be an MP anymore.
  • Were ennobled: They became a Lord or a Lady, which meant they moved to the House of Lords and left the House of Commons.
  • Were unseated on petition: This means someone complained about how the election was run, and after an investigation, the MP was removed. A new election was then held.
  • Were expelled: They were removed from Parliament for a serious reason.
  • Had a void election: The election result was cancelled, and a new one had to be held.
  • Had a double return: This happened when two different candidates were both declared winners in the same election. Parliament then had to decide who was the real winner.

When an MP left, a by-election was held to choose a replacement. The list shows who replaced them and when.
