The 1713 British general election was a big event in Great Britain! It was when people voted for their representatives, called Members of Parliament (MPs), to join the country's main law-making body, the Parliament of Great Britain. This election chose the members for the 4th Parliament of Great Britain.
In 1713, there were 558 MPs elected from 314 different areas, known as constituencies. These elections happened between August 22 and November 12, 1713. Sometimes, an MP might leave their seat early (for example, if they died or were found to have been elected unfairly). When this happened, a special election called a by-election was held to choose a replacement.
The MPs usually belonged to one of two main political groups: the Whigs or the Tories. These groups had different ideas about how the country should be run.

What are By-elections?
Sometimes, an MP might leave their seat in Parliament before the next general election. This can happen if they pass away, or if there's a problem with how they were elected. When a seat becomes empty, a special election called a by-election is held just for that one seat. This makes sure that every area always has its representatives in Parliament.
