Group 9 element facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Group 9 is a special family of elements found on the periodic table. Think of the periodic table as a big chart that organizes all the known building blocks of the universe! This group includes four interesting elements: cobalt (Co), rhodium (Rh), iridium (Ir), and meitnerium (Mt). These elements are all types of transition metals, which are known for being strong and good at conducting electricity.

What is Group 9?

This group is like a small club of elements. They are all found in the middle section of the periodic table. This area is often called the "transition metals" section. Elements in Group 9 share some similar features. For example, they are all metals.

Meet the Elements of Group 9

Cobalt (Co)

Cobalt is a shiny, silver-white metal. It has a slight blue tint. People use cobalt in many ways. It helps make strong magnets. It is also used in batteries for phones and electric cars. Cobalt can even give a blue color to glass and ceramics.

Rhodium (Rh)

Rhodium is a very rare and precious metal. It is silver-white and very shiny. Rhodium is one of the most expensive metals on Earth. It is often used in car catalytic converters. These devices help clean car exhaust. Rhodium also makes jewelry look extra bright.

Iridium (Ir)

Iridium is a very hard and brittle metal. It is also silver-white. Iridium is special because it is very resistant to corrosion. This means it does not rust or wear away easily. It is used in spark plugs and special electrical contacts. Iridium is also found in meteorites.

Meitnerium (Mt)

Meitnerium is a synthetic element. This means it is made in a laboratory. It does not occur naturally on Earth. Scientists have only made very tiny amounts of meitnerium. Because of this, we do not know much about its properties. However, scientists believe it is also a transition metal. They think it would behave like its neighbors in the periodic table.
