List of Masonic buildings in the United States facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Masonic buildings are special places where groups called Masonic lodges or other Masonic bodies meet. These groups are part of Freemasonry, one of the oldest and largest friendly organizations in the world. Many of these buildings were built with meeting rooms on the upper floors and shops or offices on the ground floor. In smaller towns, these buildings were often the grandest and tallest around!

Many Masonic buildings are considered important historical places. They might be listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), which means the U.S. government recognizes them as special. Others are part of historic districts or are recognized by local groups.

In this list, you'll find some of the most interesting Masonic buildings across the United States.

Massachusetts

Boston has been home to several important Masonic buildings over the years.

In 1830, the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts bought land and built a Temple, which was dedicated in 1832. This building also housed the Temple School and was a place where famous speakers like Ralph Waldo Emerson gave lectures. The Masons used it until 1858, when it was sold and became a department store.

From 1859, Boston's Masons met in a building called Winthrop House, which they renamed "Freemason's Hall." Sadly, this building burned down in 1864. A new, grand Masonic Temple was built in its place and opened in 1867. But fire struck again in 1895! Another temple was built at the same spot and dedicated in 1899.
