List of rivers of West Virginia facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

This is a list of rivers in the U.S. state of West Virginia.

West Virginia is known as the "Mountain State," and its rivers are super important! These rivers are formally called "rivers," but there are also many smaller streams like creeks and runs. Even though there aren't a huge number of big rivers, about 46 named ones, they have always been like natural highways.

Long ago, Native Americans used these rivers to travel through the tough mountain terrain. Later, European settlers also used them. Today, the biggest rivers still move lots of goods for businesses. Smaller rivers are perfect for fun activities like canoeing, fishing, swimming, and exciting white-water rafting!

Rivers by Their Connections

Rivers often flow into other, larger rivers, like branches joining a tree trunk. This section shows how West Virginia's rivers connect to bigger river systems. Most of them eventually reach the Ohio River, which then flows into the mighty Mississippi River.
