List of MPs elected to the English parliament in 1659 facts for kids
This article is a list of people who were Members of Parliament (MPs) in the Third Protectorate Parliament. This Parliament was a special meeting of leaders in England, Scotland, and Ireland. It started in Westminster on January 27, 1659, and lasted until April 22, 1659.
This Parliament was called by Richard Cromwell, who was the leader of England at the time, following his father Oliver Cromwell. However, Richard Cromwell closed this Parliament after only three months. Soon after, he also lost his position as leader.
After this Parliament, England went back to an older system. This involved bringing back the Long Parliament, which had first met in 1640. This Parliament had been changed into the Rump Parliament after a big event called Pride's Purge. Eventually, a new Parliament, called the Convention Parliament, met in April 1660. This Parliament invited the King to return to England, bringing back the old system of government and the Church.
The earlier Parliaments (the First Protectorate Parliament and Second Protectorate Parliament) had made some changes to how MPs were chosen. They removed some small towns that didn't have many people (sometimes called "Rotten Boroughs") and gave representation to bigger towns like Manchester, Leeds, and Halifax, as well as the county and city of Durham. The Third Protectorate Parliament went back to the older way of choosing MPs for England, but it still included representatives from Scotland and Ireland.
