Field dinos 2

Dinosaurs are a group of amazing reptiles that lived long ago. They first appeared during the Triassic period, about 243 to 233 million years ago. After a big event 201.3 million years ago, they became the main land animals. They stayed in charge throughout the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.

Did you know that birds are actually modern dinosaurs? They are feathered dinosaurs that evolved from earlier meat-eating dinosaurs called theropods during the Late Jurassic period. Birds were the only dinosaurs to survive the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event about 66 million years ago. So, dinosaurs can be split into two groups: avian dinosaurs (birds) and non-avian dinosaurs (all other dinosaurs). Birds are the only dinosaurs still alive today!

This list includes all the different types of non-avian dinosaurs that scientists have ever thought were real. It also includes some dinosaurs whose status is debated (are they birds or non-birds?). You'll also find some names that are just common terms, not official scientific ones.

The list has many accepted dinosaur types, but also some that are no longer considered valid. Some names are "doubtful" (nomen dubium), meaning scientists aren't sure if they're real types. Others were never officially published (nomen nudum). You'll also see "junior synonyms," which are names given to a dinosaur that already had a name. Some names on this list were even reclassified as true birds, crocodilians, or even petrified wood (fossilized trees)! There are 1764 names in total, but only about 1328 are thought to be real or "doubtful" dinosaur types.

Understanding Dinosaur Names

There isn't one official list of all non-avian dinosaur types. One of the best lists was put together by George Olshevsky, an expert in naming animals. It was first shared online in 1995 and updated until 2021. The book The Dinosauria (2004 edition) is also a very trusted source. Most of the names here come from Olshevsky's list. Ideas about which names are junior synonyms or not dinosaurs are based on The Dinosauria, unless newer research says something different.

Scientists follow special rules for naming animals, called the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Here are some terms you'll see:

  • Junior synonym: This is a name given to an animal that already has an older, official name. If two or more names are given to the same type of dinosaur, the first name published is the "senior synonym," and the others are "junior synonyms." Usually, the older name is used. But a junior synonym can't be used again for a different dinosaur, even if it's not used anymore. Deciding if a name is a junior synonym can sometimes be tricky.
  • Nomen nudum (Latin for "naked name"): This is a name that has appeared in books or articles but hasn't been officially published according to the rules. Nomina nuda (the plural) are not valid names and are not written in italics like proper names. If the name is later officially published, it becomes valid and will be italicized. The official name might even be different from the "naked name."
  • Nomen oblitum (Latin for "forgotten name"): This is a name that hasn't been used by scientists for more than 50 years after it was first suggested.
  • Preoccupied name: This happens when a name is officially published, but it was already used for a different animal. This second use is not valid, and the dinosaur needs a new name. Preoccupied names are not valid dinosaur names.
  • Nomen dubium (Latin for "dubious name"): This name describes a fossil that doesn't have enough unique features to be sure what kind of dinosaur it is. This can be a tricky and debated decision. Because of this, you won't see any names marked as nomen dubium on this list.
