Early Times (Before 1600)
- 1056 – Empress Theodora of the Byzantine Empire passed away. She was the last ruler of a powerful family called the Macedonian dynasty.
- 1314 – King Haakon V of Norway decided to move Norway's capital city from Bergen to Oslo.
- 1420 – A massive earthquake hit Chile, causing huge ocean waves that traveled all the way to Hawaii and Japan!
- 1422 – King Henry V of England died in France. His son, Henry VI, became King when he was only nine months old.
- 1535 – Pope Paul III removed King Henry VIII of England from the Catholic Church. This was a very serious step called excommunication.

- 1776 – William Livingston started his first term as the very first Governor of New Jersey in the United States.

- 1886 – A strong earthquake shook Charleston, South Carolina, causing a lot of damage and sadly, many deaths.
- 1895 – German Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin received a patent for his amazing invention, the navigable balloon, which was a type of airship.

- 1907 – Russia and the United Kingdom signed an agreement called the Anglo-Russian Convention, which helped define their areas of influence in parts of Asia.
- 1918 – During World War I, the Australian Corps launched a successful attack in the Battle of Mont Saint-Quentin.
- 1935 – The United States passed the first of its Neutrality Acts. These laws were meant to keep the U.S. out of growing conflicts in Europe and Asia.
- 1939 – Nazi Germany staged a fake attack on a radio station, known as the Gleiwitz incident. This was used as an excuse to invade Poland the next day, starting World War II in Europe.
- 1943 – The USS Harmon was launched. It was the first U.S. Navy ship named after a black person.
- 1957 – The Federation of Malaya (now Malaysia) gained its independence from the United Kingdom.
- 1962 – Trinidad and Tobago became an independent country.
- 1986 – A Soviet passenger ship, the Admiral Nakhimov, sank in the Black Sea after hitting another ship, leading to many lives lost.
