List of Indigenous Australian VFL/AFL and AFL Women's players facts for kids
Since the AFL (which used to be called the Victorian Football League or VFL) started in 1897, many talented Indigenous Australian players have played in its top games. Also, since the AFL Women's league began in 2017, Indigenous women have also shined.
A "senior" match means a regular season or finals game between official clubs in the VFL/AFL or AFL Women's. These games follow the official laws of Australian football. Pre-season games or international matches are not included. This list shows these amazing players in alphabetical order by their last name.
The first known Indigenous Australian player in a senior VFL/AFL game was Joe Johnson. He played 55 games for Fitzroy from 1904 to 1906. He even helped Fitzroy win two championships in 1904 and 1905! Later, Gavin Wanganeen (from Essendon and Port Adelaide) was the first Indigenous player to reach 300 games. Today, Shaun Burgoyne holds the record for most games played by an Indigenous player, with an incredible 407 games for Port Adelaide and Hawthorn.
In 2009 AFL season, a record 82 Indigenous players were part of AFL teams. This was more than the 73 players in the 2008 season. The Fremantle Football Club has been a big supporter of Indigenous players. They have had 34 Indigenous players play for their club. In 2017, they even had eight Indigenous players in one game, which is a record!
