Early History (Before 1600)
- 193 – A skilled soldier named Septimius Severus is declared emperor by the army in Illyricum.
- 537 – During the Siege of Rome, the Byzantine general Belisarius gets more soldiers, mostly skilled archers. He starts attacking the Gothic camps.
- 1241 – In the Battle of Liegnitz, Mongol forces defeat the Polish and German armies.
- 1288 – During the Mongol invasions of Vietnam, Yuan forces are defeated by Trần forces in the Battle of Bach Dang in Vietnam.
- 1388 – Forces from the Old Swiss Confederacy win against the Archduchy of Austria in the Battle of Näfels, even though they were greatly outnumbered.
- 1454 – The Treaty of Lodi is signed. This agreement helps keep peace among the city-states in northern Italy for almost 50 years.
Later History (1601–1900)
- 1609 – Eighty Years' War: Spain and the Dutch Republic sign the Treaty of Antwerp, starting a twelve-year truce.
- 1682 – Robert Cavelier de La Salle discovers the mouth of the Mississippi River. He claims the area for France and names it Louisiana.
- 1784 – The Treaty of Paris, which officially ended the American Revolutionary War, is approved by King George III of Kingdom of Great Britain.
- 1860 – Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville makes the oldest known recording of a human voice using his phonautograph machine.
- 1865 – American Civil War: General Robert E. Lee surrenders his army to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. This effectively ends the war.
