Connecticut, a state in the United States, is divided into 169 local areas called municipalities. These include 19 cities, 149 towns, and 1 borough. All these areas are part of Connecticut's eight counties.

Most towns in Connecticut traditionally use a "town meeting" style of government. This means citizens can directly vote on local laws and budgets. However, thanks to the Home Rule Act, towns can now choose different ways to govern themselves. For example, 19 towns in Connecticut have joined with their cities to form "consolidated city-towns." One place, Naugatuck, is a combined borough-town.

To become a city, an area needs a special law passed by the Connecticut General Assembly. All cities in Connecticut are part of a larger town. This means they are "dependent" on their parent town. But almost all cities in Connecticut have merged with their parent town. This makes them "consolidated" city-towns. Connecticut law treats these combined city-towns the same as regular towns. The biggest city in Connecticut is Bridgeport. Currently, Tolland County and Windham County are the only counties in Connecticut without any cities.
