Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The following people are all Grandmasters (GM) of chess. This special title is given to players who meet high standards set by FIDE, the world chess organization. Besides being a world champion, the Grandmaster title is the highest award a chess player can get. It's a title for life, but FIDE can take it away if a player cheats or commits fraud. FIDE has given out Grandmaster titles so far, not counting three that were taken back.

Grandmasters

In this list, player names are generally shown as they appear in FIDE records. This includes using special letters if they are part of the name.

The "FIDE ID" is a special code FIDE has used since 1998. Some older Grandmasters don't have one. For living Grandmasters, this ID is a link to their FIDE profile, which often shows when they were born and when they earned their GM title. IDs for Grandmasters who have passed away are kept to help with older records.

The "Title Year" is when FIDE officially gave the player the Grandmaster title. Sometimes, this might be a year after the player finished all the requirements for the title. In a few cases, like Esteban Canal, the title was given much later, looking back at their past achievements.

The "Federation" column shows which country the player represented when they got the GM title. If they later played for a different country, this is mentioned in the "Notes" section.

The "Notes" column also shares where the information for each row comes from. Many details from 1950 to 2016 are from a book called Chess International Titleholders, 1950–2016 by Di Felice.
