Early History (Before 1600)

  • 96 – Nerva becomes the new Roman emperor. The Senate, a powerful group of Roman leaders, cancels laws made by the previous emperor and orders his statues to be taken down.
  • 634 – The Arab army, led by Khalid ibn al-Walid, captures the city of Damascus from the Byzantine Empire. This was a big victory in the Siege of Damascus.
  • 1356 – The Battle of Poitiers takes place. An English army, led by Edward the Black Prince, wins a major battle against the French and captures King John II of France.
  • 1410 – The Siege of Marienburg ends. The State of the Teutonic Order successfully defends its castle against combined forces from Poland and Lithuania.

From 1600 to 1900

Modern Times (1901–Present)

  • 1916 – During World War I, colonial forces from the Belgian Congo capture the town of Tabora after heavy fighting in the Battle of Tabora.
  • 1939World War II is underway, and the Battle of Kępa Oksywska ends with significant losses for Polish forces.
  • 1940 – In a brave act of resistance during World War II, Witold Pilecki allows himself to be captured and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. His goal was to gather information for the resistance movement.
  • 1944World War II: The Battle of Hürtgen Forest begins. This battle would become the longest single battle ever fought by the U.S. Army.
  • 1944 – The Moscow Armistice is signed between Finland and the Soviet Union, officially ending the Continuation War.
  • 1946 – The Council of Europe is formed after a speech by Winston Churchill in Switzerland. This organization aims to promote cooperation and human rights in Europe.
  • 1950 – During the Korean War, an attack by North Korean forces is stopped at the Battle of Nam River.
  • 1957 – "Plumbbob Rainier" becomes the first nuclear explosion to be completely contained underground, meaning it produced no dangerous fallout.

  • 1997 – The Guelb El-Kebir massacre in Algeria results in the deaths of 53 people.
  • 2006 – The Thai army stages a coup, taking control of the government. The country's constitution is canceled, and martial law is declared.
  • 2008 – A Learjet 60 carrying musicians Travis Barker and Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein crashes during takeoff in South Carolina. Four people die, but Barker and Goldstein survive.
  • 2010 – The leaking oil well from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is finally sealed, stopping the massive oil leak.
