There are about 180 different types of money used as official payment in countries around the world. These countries include those that are part of the United Nations (UN), observer states, and even some places with limited recognition or dependencies.
However, if we only count currencies that are independent (not tied to another currency) or are tied to a group of different currencies, there are about 130 of them. We only list dependencies or unrecognized states if they use a different currency than the country that manages them.
What is a Currency?
A currency is a type of money that people use to buy and sell things. It's a way to exchange value. Currencies usually come as paper banknotes or metal coins. Most countries are the only ones allowed to print and make their own money. However, some countries share a currency with others.
For this list, we only include currencies that are officially recognized as "legal tender". This means they are accepted for payments. This includes money used every day and special coins or notes made for collecting. It also includes tiny parts of a currency that don't have a physical coin or note, like the United States mill or the Japanese rin.
We don't include money used by private groups, like special tokens or virtual money like Bitcoin (unless it's officially adopted by a country, like in El Salvador).
-
The U.S. dollar is the official money of the United States. It's the most important money used for international trade and the most traded currency in the world.
-
The Euro is used by many countries and is the second most important and traded currency.
-
Some currencies, like the Abkhazian apsar, are official but not used much for daily shopping.
