List of areas in the United States National Park System facts for kids

The National Park System in the United States is a huge collection of amazing places managed by the National Park Service. It includes all the famous national parks and many national monuments. It also has other kinds of protected areas of the United States like historical sites and recreation areas.
As of December 2023, there are 417 different places in the National Park System. Sometimes, the way they are counted can be a bit tricky. For example, Denali National Park and Preserve counts as two units because it's both a national park and a national preserve. But Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve counts as just one, even though it has a double name. The way they are counted depends on the laws that created them.
Even though these places have different names like "park" or "monument," they are all treated equally by the National Park Service. Their names usually describe what makes them special. Each place has a plan to protect its nature, history, and fun activities.
The National Park Service also helps out other special places that are not officially part of the system. These are called "affiliated areas." They get help with advice and money from Congress.
You can find National Park System places in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and U.S. territories like Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. The Northern Mariana Islands has an affiliated area, but not an official park unit.
Almost all places managed by the National Park Service take part in the National Park Passport Stamps program. It's a fun way to collect stamps from all the parks you visit!
