- 43 BC – In ancient Rome, armies loyal to the Roman Senate won a battle against the forces of Mark Antony at Forum Gallorum.
- 69 – Vitellius, a Roman general, defeated Emperor Otho in the First Battle of Bedriacum. This win helped Vitellius become the new ruler of Rome.
- 966 – Mieszko I, the leader of the Polans, became a Christian after marrying Doubravka of Bohemia. This event is seen as the start of the Polish state.
- 972 – Otto II, a co-Emperor, married a Byzantine princess named Theophanu. She was crowned empress on the same day.
- 1395 – In the Tokhtamysh–Timur war, Timur defeated the army of the Golden Horde at the Battle of the Terek River. This battle greatly weakened the Golden Horde's military power.
- 1471 – In England, the Yorkist army, led by Edward IV, defeated the Lancastrians at the Battle of Barnet. The Lancastrian leader, the Earl of Warwick, was killed, and Edward became king again.
- 1561 – People in Nuremberg reported seeing strange things in the sky, which they described as an aerial battle.

- 1639 – During the Thirty Years' War, Swedish forces defeated the armies of the Holy Roman Empire and Electorate of Saxony at the Battle of Chemnitz. This victory allowed the Swedes to move into Bohemia.
- 1775 – The first group in North America to work against slavery, called the "Society for the Relief of Free Negroes Unlawfully Held in Bondage," was started in Philadelphia by Benjamin Franklin and Benjamin Rush.
- 1793 – French troops, led by Léger-Félicité Sonthonax, won against slave settlers in the Siege of Port-au-Prince.
- 1816 – Bussa, a slave in Barbados, led a slave rebellion. He is remembered as a national hero for this brave act.
- 1849 – Hungary declared itself independent from Austria, with Lajos Kossuth as its leader.
- 1858 – A large fire in Christiania, Norway, destroyed many city blocks. About 1000 people lost their homes.
